The Black Youth Project (BYP) is committed to producing research about the ideas, attitudes, and experiences of young black people; providing a platform for their voices and perspectives; and mobilizing young people and their allies to make positive change and build the world within which they want to live. Our work is structured around three pillars:

KNOWLEDGE: We produce research about the ideas, attitudes, decision making, and lived experiences of black youth, especially as it relates to their political and civic engagement.

VOICE: Unlike any other organization, we amplify the perspectives of young black people daily without censorship or control. We have built a space on the Internet where black youth can speak for themselves about the issues that concern them.

ACTION: Informed with culturally specific knowledge, we work to mobilize black youth and their allies to make positive change and build the world within which they want to live.

Through all of our work, we strive for the empowerment of youth and young adults through our many programs and initiatives, which include the following:

  • Hosting a convening of 100 young black activists who have evolved into an organization called the BYP100. The BYP100 is a national membership organization of 18- to 35-year-old activists focused on leadership development and the mobilization of black youth on issues, such as voting rights, criminalization, mass incarceration, LGBT justice, and women’s rights, using new media and direct-action organizing. Please visit www.byp100.org/donate to make a gift to BYP100.
  • Hosting the BYP Summer Research Institute, a training program for Chicago Public Schools high school students with a focus on teaching research methods, media literacy, and organizing.
  • Publishing a monthly research memo that highlights the political attitudes and actions of young people, especially black and Latino young adults.

If you would like to help us continue to realize this mission, we welcome your support and generosity.

The Black Youth Project is housed at the University of Chicago, which means that the University provides important in-kind assistance and limited financial support. However, most of the funding to run BYP comes from sources outside the University. We hope you will consider donating to support our work.
